Troy Industries AK 47 Full Length Rail Review

14/07/28 at 8.04am   /   by Rob Ski   /   90 Comments

Troy Industries with their AK47 rail system brings wave of fresh air into the AK world. Their rail design clearly separates Troy from the crowded “AK Rails” market. However, more conservative AK users will probably find this design way too extreme. Personally I like it a lot, because their rail offers fantastic ergonomics and it really helps to better control rifle. At this point Troy makes 2 different lower parts (short and long) and has 1 extra railed gas tube part as well. All these are independent from each other and you don’t need top part to use lower part and vice versa. Now, when lower part is rock solid, we did encounter some problems with railed gas tube replacement. Mounting for it is based on small size castle nut and we had a hard time to keep that nut from untwisting. I’m looking now for dedicated wrench for it (it is different size than traditional castle nuts) and we will go back to this issue again in future episodes. Overall, Troy made a darn solid product and i’m very pleased with it. Please note that this rail will not mount on AKs with 24mm front end!
Weight specifications:
Top Rail (railed gas tube): 5.68oz (161 grams)
Lower Rail Full Length: 10.98oz (311.27 grams)
Short Rail: 8.80oz (249.47 grams)

I know this is an old thread/post, but if anyone was interested in running this extended on their AK with 24mm front sight base…IT FITS NOW…20min install. Video was helpful, it’s tricky to adjust at first, but patience and it’s done.

          Hi Rob.
I’m new to the Ak platform, I just purchased a c39v2 and I want to put the long Troy rail on.
Can you elaborate on Just how much dremel work will have to be done and what parts will
it have to be done to. I was looking at magpul but I don’t want to cut the lower guard retaining ring
And the Troy looks so much better. Thank you.

Why does the Troy rail not fit? Is it just a matter of reducing the size of the tab that goes into the front of the receiver, to fit the smaller opening below the barrel for the front hand guard to mount? Or is there some other reason that it does not fit?
I am very interested if this hand guard could be modified to work with the C39s because it is so light.

You would have to do some modifications with Dremel tool to make it fit. Would be possible? Yes, but God knows how this would hold up during extended use…

Posted on your Facebook site also. The gas tube rail has been upgraded to a 7/8 in nut instead of the castle nut. Going to order the complete package, short bottom with 3 rails next week. Looking forward to some shooting. Kind of has a PTR 91 look at quick glance.

75% probability that yes, it would survive. My only beef is with their locking bolts – you need to use loctite or they will get loose from recoil…now with dragging behind the car and tree dropping, that’s a lot of “shock and awe” for that rail mounting system…

Hdy guys, i just wanted to add something here. The LONG troy bottom rail will only fit a c39v2 with modification. You absolutely must cut off the gas block mounted sling loop and grind it down so no nubs are showing on the top and bottom. Also, and this is important, you absolutely must remove material from the the bottom rear of the picatinny railed top section of the troy long AK rail. This is a must in order to give the rail clearance from the gas block. You could remove material from the gas block but i do not advise this at all. You could screw it up massively, and grinding the aluminum of the troy rail is much easier than grinding the steel of the gas block. I have done this and it only took a few hours. Only remove a little material at a time and check the fit often. I have pictures if you want to see so you may email me if you care to see them. The end result turned out very nicely, and you cannot see ANY grinding marks because they are all done on the inside of the rail.

I forgot to add something. The c39v2 does not have a large enough opening in the front trunnion to fit either of the troys rails, unless to remove the two rear screws on the very back of the troy AK rails. This does not matter much because this block is still tightly secured by two more screws on the sides of the rails. I believe Rob ski covered something similar to this when he did the “under the hood video” of the c39v2 and he clearly stated that standard handguards will not fit without dremel/removal modifications to the rear of the handguards. The opening on the c39v2 is the proper depth but it does not have the proper height and width specs. This is not a big deal in my humble opinion because the troy rail still fits and is very secure with blue loctite. I must also strongly reinforce Rob Ski’s statement to place whatever extra rail segments in place BEFORE you install the rail and preferably before you use the blue loctite just to make your life easier.
I just got my c39v2 a couple weeks ago, and other than the modifications i have listed, the rifle has been a dream. All other furniture install very easily and is secure. 1k rounds through it so far and not a one malfunction other than a singular FTF due to an old chinese magazine with a kinked spring. Nothing to do with the rifle. Sorry for being long winded, i just wish to help my fellow AK shooters if they are in the same boat as me. Keep shootin straight and above all else, be safe!

guess i’m a year late, but the mods i did have held up wonderfully. My c39v2 has survived for a little over year and about 3,500+/- rounds of tula, wolf, remington, and silver/brown bear ammo. No issues whatsoever. I just put about 3 drips of blue loctite on both of the hex screws for the troy long bottom rail, and it has held solid through everything. I lent my AK to a buddy for a tactical carbine course that involved quite a bit of dropping and other more rugged use. Alas, the rail and every other mod has held up perfectly. Hope you’re doing alright. Sorry for delayed response if you read this.

First let me say that you channel and store are awesome. I appreciate the no bullshit approach you guys have in reviews.
No on to my question. Do you know if the Troy rail would fit on a DDI stamped receiver or the RAS 47? Also are you all going to do anything else with the RAS 47? The accuracy looked promising, until it kinda shit the bed on your tests. Did the receiver maybe get a small bend in it during the drive over test?

    • Rob Ski says:
      August 29, 2015 at 6:34 pm

Troy rail should fit both, DDI and RAS47. Small trimming maybe required, but nothing major.
@RAS47 – we can’t do anything more, because Century didn’t like our review and they took those rifles back…so, no more RAS47 or C39V2…too bad, because i thought that accuracy is really their strong point.

Wow that’s unbelievable, not doubting you just shocked at the “take my ball and go home” mentality. I liked what I heard as far as accuracy on the RAS 47. But the test honestly scared me away from it some. I don’t plan on running it over anytime soon, but seeing that flex and the failures after have me questioning their receiver.

What handguard would you recommend that I won’t have to do this much work that is gonna give me room for furniture ? Or should I remove the fsb and thread the barrel and bring this russian rifle back to its splendor?

will the lower fit on an ati at-47 yugo with grenade sight? ive already cut my grenade sight to accommodate the troy top rail. it fit without cutting but did not leave enough room for the eotech 512 (the one with the long base) so it got dremeled.

and sorry if you covered this, but will the cleaning rod fit in the extended lower? pics look like it does.
and would the sling ring need to be cut off to accommodate the extended lower? id hate to do that but its getting in the way of almost any lower i look at. the pic makes it look like your sling ring pokes out in the gap on the lower.

its tough to find parts for this rifle that are an ‘out of the box’ solution. id like something distinctive like this system. ive contacted tws and they are going to release a 2.5 yugo version of their system compatible with my gen 2 dog leg but even that will cover the grenade sight entirely. MI systems , i was lucky enough to find at a local store and found none of the lowers would fit properly, so even though they are cool, its not a fit. please give me good news on this one. the pics make it look promising.

I have this rail (long lower & upper) on my Saiga AK-74 conversion. I love the ergonomics of it and prefer to keep it on the rifle. However, I am at a loss as to how to keep the damn thing on. I have tightened the two bolts holding the lower to the frame time and time again. I have even put red locktite on the bolt threads but sure enough…the rail will wiggle itself lose after some sustained fire (usually within 5 mags worth).

Rob: I plan on brining this rifle to the training next week in Boulder City, NV. I will bring a back-up in case the same issue persists. Maybe you can share some thoughts on how to deal with this problem.

I finally converted the saiga .308 with pistol grip, trigger group from dinzag and a archangel stock. Like you, I also like some wood on her and I like the lower factory grip. I love the archangel set-up on my Norinco sks but the buttstock for the ak is just not good. Whats a good hand grip for the .308 without modification? I am sure as hell not going to cut into the barrel. Also, will the zhukov stock hold up to the larger caliber. Thanks. I love the union!

I like the way this rail looks and possibly functions, can anyone confirm if this would fit on the Arsenal SAM7SF?

I don’t think it will work with milled receiver…try to ask them directly man.

    Hi Rob,

Do we think this rail would work with the new PSA AK-103? Thanks for all your work.

I have no idea. Best to ask manufacturer. But I will tell you, i never managed to secure those tension screws back then…they always found a way to become lose.

    Hi Rob,

Will the troy industries handguard fit well on an Arsenal SLR 107?

It should fit, but i wouldn’t recommend doing it. I could never stop those screws from unscrewing on their own…
